Whiners and Winners in the Workplace
Every workplace has its usual range of personalities, and some are better for the environment than others. Two of the biggest personality types, and two of most easily identified types, are whiners and winners, and it’s important to figure out which category you fall into.
Winners are the kind of people that approach work with a “can-do” attitude. They approach each new challenge with zeal and energy. They tend to positively attract other people to them and stand out in a crowd. Instead of holding on to the status quo, they want to make necessary changes in the workplace and make it a better place.
Whiners are usually the complete opposite. You don’t see them jumping to get anything done, and when they do their pace is lethargic at best. In fact, they spend a lot of time putting down the people they see as winners, preferring to be part of the problem rather than the solution.
Whiners are often unaware of what they’re doing. Today’s stressful work market can get anyone down, and it’s easy to fall into a pattern of negativity.
If you’re not sure whether you’re a whiner, try being mindful of what you say throughout the day. After you’ve made an exchange with a co-worker and return to your regular work, as yourself whether that exchange was positive or negative. Keep score on a peice of paper.
If, by the end of the day, your negatives are a lot more prevalent than your positives, you’re probably a whiner. Now you can consciously start working to make your speech, and your attitude more positive.
